Machine Translation Gone Horribly Wrong

E-mail Print PDF

Hello there,

This is just a quick blog post. I am working on one of my clients' project using Wordfast Anywhere. Wordfast Anywhere is great for improving your time spent on translating hundreds of words, by being able to translate chunk by chunk, with pre-established machine translation to help increase the typing time. A great tool that I am using since its launch.

But look at what the French suggested translation was for the English:

Totally wrong machine translation

As you can see, our machine translation is... perverted. It translated "hottest babes" as "smallest kids". Hopefully I am able to correct the sentence, but this made me think about companies only using machine translations. Awful translations can break a deal so easily.

Here's what it made me think about, have fun:

Jaoul Translations is proud to annonce its cooperation with Bethesda Softworks to translate RAGE the game, coming out in stores today in Europe.

The asteroid strikes on August 23, 2038, and the few pockets of survivors are forced to begin a new civilization.

The world is populated by human survivors of the impact, who have come together to form settlements around oases and other practical or habitable locations, including racetracks. These fragile homes are diligently defended by the inhabitants against bandits and mutants, which are divided into various gangs and organizations of their own.

You've been preserved inside an underground shelter called an Ark. The Arks are the direct result of the Eden Project, a massive international undertaking in which hundreds of Arks (cryogenic pods) were sealed under the surface of the Earth with twelve people inside each. Each passenger possessed a special ability or trait that, combined with those of the other members, would help them rebuild society. The Eden Project, however, was far less successful than hoped. Your Ark in particular is in sorry shape upon the start of the game - all of the other residents of your Ark are dead, and the equipment of the Ark is destroyed as well, and so you wake up alone and uninformed. With no memory of your identity or objective, you are forced to head for the surface to find sustenance and allies.
